![]() Instead of playing it as a “3D” Mario platformer, I tried playing it as a 2D game set in a 3D space. ![]() It never occurred to me that 3D World/Land are not meant to be variations on 3D Mario platformers as much as they are on 2D Mario platformers. Since Super Mario 3D Land and Super Mario 3D World both have “3D” in the title, I naturally compared them to games like Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario Galaxy, and Super Mario Sunshine. In my review, which you can read here, all my comparisons to 3D World were to other 3D Mario platformers. Maybe unfairly so because even months after I put it down and told myself I wasn’t going back to it, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was missing something, in spite of my issues and frustration with its mechanics, especially its camera. Earlier this year, I played through Super Mario 3D World on the Switch and was pretty tough on it in my review.
